INTERSTATE 95

The only two-digit interstate in the state of Delaware, Interstate 95 spans 23 miles in the northern part of the First State. Its first few miles are on the Delaware Turnpike, where a $2 toll is paid to drive on only about seven miles! After the DE 1/7 cloverleaf interchange (Exits 4A-B), the tolls end. The highway then intersects U.S. 202, Interstate 295, and Interstate 495 in a cluster of interchanges. Interstate 495 is mostly a through route for those wanting to continue towards Philadelphia while bypassing the Wilmington area to its east. For those staying on Interstate 95, however, they will see the highway head through Wilmington. Just south of the Pennsylvania State Line, Interstate 495 merges with Interstate 95, and the highway (now just Interstate 95) enters Pennsylvania, and will enter Philadelphia in 20 miles.

Northbound:

Welcome to Delaware sign on Interstate 95 North. The speed limit is
55 mph, but even going 70 is too slow for almost everybody!

Interstate 95 North at the toll plaza. EZPass customers get $1.25
deducted from their account, while cash customers get $2 less in
their pockets. (Photo taken 3/19/03)
A closer view of the toll plaza. Looks much like a normal toll
plaza in the northeast, at least from what I saw on this trip. (And I
paid a lot of tolls!) (Photo taken 3/19/03)
Interstate 95 North approaching Exit 1 - DE 896 - 1/2 mile. Exit
numbers in Delaware are sequential (1, 2, 3, etc.) instead of
mileage-based, like what I have seen in every other state I've been
in in my life, except for Delaware! (Photo taken 3/19/03)

(Photo taken 3/19/03)
Interstate 95 North at the Delaware Turnpike Service Area. I
guess this could be considered Exit 2, since the next interchange is
Exit 3 at DE 273. This service area is another one that puts the
ones in Oklahoma and Kansas to shame, as this one offers several
options. (Photo taken 3/19/03)
Interstate 95 North at Exit 3A - DE 273 East - Dover. But DE 273
does not even get close to Dover! I guess it is referring to its
connection to DE 1 a mile to the southeast of this interchange.

freeway from here all the way to the Dover Air Force Base south
of the state capital. (Top photo taken 3/19/03, bottom photo taken

sign, however, leaves off Basin Rd. (Photo taken 3/19/03)

previously mentioned signs for DE 141 North are just to the right
out of view here. (Photo taken 3/19/03)
Much like the split of Interstate 95 and Interstate 295, the Interstate
495 exit gets plenty of advanced warning. These particular signs
are about 1/2 mile from the exit. (Photo taken 3/19/03)

Three lanes will go to Interstate 495, while two will continue on

Interstate 95 North at Exit 7 - DE 52 - Delaware Ave. There are
signs for the exit on both of the bridges ahead before the actual
exit. Also notice that it says "Must Exit" instead of the more common
"Exit Only." They must do things weird in Delaware. (Photo taken

Continue on Interstate 95 in Pennsylvania

Southbound:

Interstate 95 South approaching Exit 11 - Interstate 495 South - 1
mile. This sign is actually in Pennsylvania. The actual exit also
does not have an exit number, but the Keystone State gives it
one here. (Top photo taken 3/19/03, bottom photo taken 8/4/03)

traffic is advised to use Interstate 495. (Top photo taken

the exit. We have just entered Delaware, but won't see the
welcome sign until past the Interstate 495 interchange. (Photo

A very old Interstate 495 shield is located near the Interstate
495 junction. The shield has obviously seen its better days.

Yet another mileage sign, just 1/2 mile down the road. Exit 7
has been relegated to an "Exit Only" sign, and the U.S. 202/
DE 141 interchange has been added to the mileage sign.

take you to the Exxon gas station, where gas was $1.54/gallon
for unleaded on this day, and going straight will take you to the
rest of the service area. (Photo taken 8/4/03)
