DE 23

Highway Review:
DE 23 is a bow-shaped highway in eastern Sussex County. It begins heading west from Masseys Landing and then begins heading northwest at the DE 5/24 intersection. There, DE 5 joins DE 23 for a 2 1/2-mile long duplex, then DE 23 heads due north. The highway then begins curving to the northeast before coming to an end at U.S. 9/DE 1/DE 404, at an intersection known as Five Points because there are five roads that come into the same intersection: DE 1 from the west and east, U.S. 9 from the southwest and east, Business U.S. 9 from the northeast, and DE 23 from the south-southwest, slightly east of where U.S. 9 intersects DE 1.

Highway Information:
Distance: 14.9 miles

SOUTHERN TERMINUS
Masseys Landing

"Road Ends 500 Ft." sign as DE 23 is about to end in
Masseys Landing. (Photo taken 8/5/03)
DE 23 comes to an end in a parking lot. There is no
"END" sign at this terminus. (Photo taken 8/5/03)
Turning around; the beginning of DE 23 North. The
highway is actually heading west at this point. DE 5/
DE 24 are five and a half miles ahead. (Photo taken

First DE 23 North assurance shield on the highway.
As you can tell, this was a wet day for roadtripping.
But, this was the final day I would be in Delaware for
a long time, so I had to get what I could! (Photo taken

OTHER HIGHWAY PICTURES

DE 23 North at DE 24. DE 5 comes in from the west,
and joins DE 23 North at this stoplight. (Photo taken

DE 5/DE 23 South at DE 24. DE 5 turns right at the
light, even though no signs indicate that is so. The
first assurance shields west of the light, however,
have both DE 5 and DE 24 shields. (Photo taken

NORTHERN TERMINUS
U.S. 9/DE 1/DE 404, Five Points

DE 1 South at U.S. 9/404 West/TO DE 23/1D at Five
Points. The U.S. 404 shield should be a DE 404 shield,
since there is no U.S. 404. And if there was, it would be
nowhere near east-central Delaware! (Photo taken
