North Carolina 132 is 15 miles long and stays within New Hanover County. It is duplexed with U.S. 117 for most of its route after the federal highway was relocated in 2002. Prior to 2002, U.S. 117 followed what is now North Carolina 133 to U.S. 421 in northwest Wilmington. North Carolina 132's southern terminus is at U.S. 421 in south Wilmington; its northern end is at the North Carolina 133 intersection in Castle Hayne.

A detour was in place for southbound North Carolina 133 traffic along U.S. 117 and North Carolina 132 north. This may be associated with the construction on Interstate 140, the Northern Outer Loop of Wilmington that was under construction from 2003 to 2005. (Photo taken 7/6/05)
