SPRING TRAINING 2004 ROADTRIP
Arizona Loop 101

Loop 101 comprises about 2/3 of a Phoenix beltway. It serves mostly the northern and eastern sections of the Phoenix metropolitan area. On Day Six of the Spring Training 2004 Roadtrip, I drove Loop 101.

	Loop 101 North approaching Exit 3 - Thomas Rd. - 1/2 mile. Thomas Rd. is the first interchange north of Interstate 10 for northbound travelers.
	Loop 101 North assurance shield just north of Interstate 10. This section is known as the Agua Fria Freeway.
	Loop 101 North at Exit 3 - Thomas Rd.
	Loop 101 South at Exit 3 - Thomas Rd.
	Loop 101 South approaching Exit 3 - 3/4 mile, and Exits 1A-B - Interstate 10 - 2 miles. There is a sign goof here - the exit tab for Interstate 10 says "Exit 1-AB" instead of "Exit 1A-B."

	Loop 101 North at Exit 11 - U.S. 60 - Grand Ave. Traffic began to back up here due to the closure of the northbound lanes a mile ahead due to an accident. This was a fun 45- minute traffic jam.
	Loop 101 North at Exit 12 - Thunderbird Rd. Due to the accident, I had to detour along city streets for a few miles. Thankfully, the Phoenix- area streets are set up in a grid, just like Oklahoma City, so it wasn't too difficult.

	Loop 101 East approaching Interstate 17 - 1/4 mile.
	Loop 101 East at unmarked Exit 23 - Interstate 17 - Flagstaff/Phoenix.
	Before the exit ramp gets to Interstate 17, Exit 23A for 27th Ave. departs.

	Loop 101 South at Exit 49 - McDowell Rd.
	Loop 101 South approaching Exit 50 - McKellips Rd. - 3/4 mile, and Exit 51 - Loop 202 - 1 1/2 miles.

	Loop 101 South approaching Exit 51 - 1/2 mile.

	Loop 101 South at Exit 52 - Rio Salado Pky./8th St./University Dr. This is the first time I have seen "Parkway" abbreviated "Pky."

	Loop 101 South approaching Exit 54 - Southern Ave./Baseline Rd. - 3/4 mile, and Exit 55 - U.S. 60 - 1 mile.

	Loop 101 South approaching Exit 61A - 1/4 mile, and Exit 61B - 1/2 mile. The left sign panel is blank for a future sign for Loop 202 East when it is completed.

	Loop 101 South near its southeastern terminus at Loop 202. All traffic must exit onto Loop 202 West, which was completed between Interstate 10 and Loop 101 in late 2003.
