INTERSTATE 540

The original Interstate 540 in Arkansas travels through the south and east sides of Fort Smith. It connects Fort Smith to Interstate 40. In 1999, Interstate 540 was extended northward to connect with Fayetteville and Bentonville. The route north of Interstate 40 is slated to become part of Interstate 49 in the future after connections to the current Interstate 49 in Louisiana are made.

Currently, Interstate 540 is 81 miles long, which does not include its 5-mile duplex with Interstate 40. It ends at the U.S. 62/AR 102 interchange (Exit 86) in Rogers. The freeway continues as solely U.S. 71. Between Interstate 40 and Fayetteville, U.S. 71 runs parallel to the interstate, and from Fayetteville to Rogers, Interstate 540 and U.S. 71 are duplexed. Per Arkansas tradition, only the main route (Interstate 540) is signed; U.S. 71 is not signed during this duplexed stretch.

A new interchange is being built in Alma on Interstate 540 a mile north of Interstate 40. This will eventually be Exit 21. Exit numbers on Interstate 540 south of Interstate 40 are a bit interesting. The numbers go from north to south. For example, Exit 14 is the southernmost interchange, yet Exit 15 is placed at Interstate 40, the northernmost interchange on that stretch.
