Past Pictures of the Week Week of October 27-November 2, 2003:
Interstate 35 North at Exit 106 - OK 9 West - Chickasha. OK 9 runs along Interstate 35 for 1 1/4 miles as the highways cross the Canadian River just ahead. The "Drive Carefully" sign is an old-time touch to this sign bridge. Week of October 20-26, 2003: Interstate 44 East at Exit 127 - Interstate 235 South - Oklahoma City/Downtown and U.S. 77 - Edmond. The cloverleaf interchange serves as the northern terminus of Interstate 235, also known as the Centennial Expressway. The interstate's completion in 1989 was during the 100-year anniversary of the Land Run. Week of October 13-19, 2003: Interstate 45 South at Exit 276B - Interstate 20 East - Shreveport; south of Dallas. I took the South Texas Roadtrip during this week. Week of October 6-12, 2003: Interstate 40 East at Exit 264A - U.S. 69 South - Eufaula. U.S. 69 is a freeway between McAlester and Muskogee. Week of September 29-October 5, 2003: Interstate 40 East at Exit 240A - Indian Nation Turnpike - McAlester/Dallas. The longest of Oklahoma's ten turnpikes, the Indian Nation spans from Hugo to McAlester to Interstate 40, a distance of 104 miles. The turnpike connects to U.S. 69 in McAlester, which eventually connects to U.S. 75, which ends in downtown Dallas. Week of September 22-28, 2003: Creek Turnpike East at Exit 33B - Interstate 44/U.S. 412/OK 66 West - Tulsa. The flyover ramp carries Interstate 44 traffic over the Creek Turnpike and U.S. 412 before the interstate merges onto the Creek Turnpike ahead. U.S. 412 runs underneath the mainline overpass just past the sign bridge. Week of September 15-21, 2003: U.S. 64 West/U.S. 169 North/Creek Turnpike East at Creek Turnpike East/E. 96th St. S./Broken Arrow exit in south Tulsa. Mingo Rd. crosses the highway just ahead. This interchange is in the first mile of U.S. 169, which begins at U.S. 64 a mile west of this interchange. Notice how U.S. 64 is not signed here, even though it does run on this freeway. Week of September 8-14, 2003: Creek Turnpike East at the U.S. 75 South - Glenpool exit near Jenks. Until 2001, this interchange was the western terminus of the Creek Turnpike. Now, the toll road connects to Interstate 44 to the southwest and to the east of Tulsa. Week of September 1-7, 2003: Interstate 40 West at Exit 41 - Business Loop I-40 West/OK 34 North - Woodward/Elk City. The sign was replaced in 2003, but the signmaker made one glaring error: they put an Interstate 40 shield on the sign instead of a Business Loop I-40 shield! The one-mile advance signage for this interchange also has this error. Week of August 25-31, 2003: U.S. 77 North at the Kilpatrick Turnpike exit in northern Oklahoma City. The Broadway Extension freeway comes to an end in 1/2 mile at Memorial Rd. Week of August 18-24, 2003: Interstate 35 South at the Interstate 240 West exit in Oklahoma City. The interstate is being widened to three lanes in each direction in this area, so traffic has been rerouted on the former collector/distributor lanes for the Interstate 240 interchange while the new lanes are constructed. Week of August 11-17, 2003: Interstate 35 South at Exit 31B - U.S. 70 West - Waurika/Lone Grove, in Ardmore. The interstate's northbound lanes are being resurfaced, so all traffic is using the southbound lanes, with one lane allocated for each direction. Week of August 4-10, 2003: U.S. 13 North as it crosses the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel between Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Virginia's Eastern Shore. Delaware Trip Part 2 was in progress during this week and ended on Saturday, August 9, after 4,145 miles of driving in 12 days. Week of July 28-August 3, 2003: Interstate 35 South at Exit 467 - Interstate 35W South - Ft. Worth, in Denton, Texas. This is the northern split of Interstate 35E/35W in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I drove through this interchange on Day One of Delaware Trip Part 2, which began on July 29. And, yes, the Interstate 35W shield was still missing at that time! Week of July 21-27, 2003: Interstate 240/U.S. 62/OK 3 West at Exit 1A - Interstate 44/U.S. 62 West - Lawton. This is the western terminus of Interstate 240. The highway becomes Interstate 44 East at this interchange. Exit 116A for S.W. 59th St. is just ahead. Week of July 14-20, 2003: OK 9 West at U.S. 62 - Blanchard/Newcastle exit. The Norman Spur of the H.E. Bailey Turnpike begins straight ahead. OK 9 also exits here, even though no signs indicate its departure from the roadway. Week of July 7-13, 2003: Interstate 35 South at Exit 194A - U.S. 412/Cimarron Turnpike East - Tulsa. The Cimarron Turnpike connects Enid and Interstate 35 to the Tulsa area. Week of June 30-July 6, 2003: Interstate 70 East approaching Exit 2L - Interstate 670 West TO Interstate 35 South - Wichita, and Exit 2M - U.S. 71 South, in Kansas City, Missouri. After driving through this interchange on Sunday, June 29, 2003, on Day Seven of the Deserts & Mountains Trip, I clinched all of Interstate 70's miles from Utah to Baltimore.
