DESERTS & MOUNTAINS TRIP
Trip Summaries - Days 4-7
(San Luis Obispo to Kansas City)

DAY SEVEN SUMMARY
Sunday, June 29, 2003

For the first time this trip, the skies opened up, and I had to drive through rain. Thankfully, the rain was in the form of light sprinkles which fell about 20 different times throughout the 431 miles I drove this day. I also clinched Interstate 70 by driving the highway from Colby to Kansas City, which was the only part of the interstate I had not driven when this day began. I arrived at my relatives' house just after 4:00 and settled in, and watched thunderstorms roll in.

A day after the longest day of the trip, I had the shortest day of the trip. I drove just 357 miles from Cedar City to Grand Junction. The highlight of the day was driving through the mountains of central Utah. Besides that, nothing else interesting happened. Let's just put it this way - Grand Junction was the largest city I was in all day!

DAY FOUR SUMMARY
Thursday, June 26, 2003

This was the longest major roadtrip day in OKRoads.com history, and the 2nd longest roadtrip day of my life. I drove 599 miles from San Luis Obispo to Cedar City, Utah. I started out by going north on U.S. 101, where I got caught up in a traffic jam on the Cuestra Grade due to construction. Then I hit CA 58 East, where I got to experience 2-lane mountain driving for several miles, hairpins and all! After going through the mountains I continued on CA 58 to Barstow, where I saw more mountains and got caught in another traffic jam near Caliente due to a terrible 2-car accident that had closed the westbound lanes completely. Then I stopped at Wendy's in Mojave for lunch, and hit CA 58 again for the stretch to Barstow. Then I headed north on Interstate 15 for the rest of the day. There were a few slowdowns due to construction and slow drivers on uphills trying to pass even slower drivers! I then headed through Las Vegas, where I hit the first part of the afternoon rush hour, which slowed me down once again! After that, though, there weren't any more major slowdowns, and I arrived in Cedar City at 7:44 PM MDT; 11 hours and 12 minutes after I left San Luis Obispo.
