DELAWARE TRIP
Interstate 70 Maryland

Interstate 70 runs from Interstate 15 near Cove Fort, Utah, to a Park & Ride lot just east of Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland. I drove Interstate 70 from St. Louis to Baltimore during Day Two, Day Three, and Day Four of the Delaware Trip.

"Maryland Welcomes You" sign on Interstate
70 East. After traveling through Utah, Colorado,
Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West
Virginia, and Pennsylvania, Maryland is the
10th and final state on Interstate 70. During this
trip, I drove in six of those states!
Ground level BGS on Interstate 70 East at Exit
1A - Interstate 68/U.S. 40 West - Cumberland.
Gantry BGS's at Exit 1A - Interstate 68/U.S. 40
West - Cumberland. Interstate 68 spans from
Interstate 79 near Morgantown, West Virginia,
to Interstate 70 here.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 1B - U.S. 522 South -
Hancock/Winchester.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 3 - MD 144 -
Hancock. Interstate 70 squeezes through in
this part of Maryland, which is less than 10
miles wide from north to south.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 5 - MD 615.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 9 - U.S. 40 - Indian
Springs.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 12 - MD 56 - Indian
Springs/Big Pool.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 18 - MD 68 - Clear
Spring.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 24 - MD 63 - Huyett/
Williamsport. (Apologies for the sun glare.)
Interstate 70 East approaching Exit 26 -
Interstate 81 North & South - 1 1/2 miles.
Interstate 70 East approaching Exit 26 -
Interstate 81 North & South - 1/2 mile.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 26 - Interstate 81
North & South - Roanoke/Harrisburg.
Interstate 70 East collector/distributor lane at
Interstate 81 North - Hagerstown/Harrisburg.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 28 - MD 632 -
Hagerstown/Downsville.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 29A - MD 65 South -
Sharpsburg.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 32A - U.S. 40 East.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 32B - U.S. 40 West -
Hagerstown.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 35 - MD 66 -
Smithsburg/Boonsboro.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 42 - MD 17 -
Myersville/Middletown Rd.
Located between Exit 42 and Exit 48, this
bridge spans high over the scenery in this
part of Maryland.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 48 - U.S. 40 East -
Frederick.
Mileage sign on Interstate 70 East in west
Frederick. It is one mile to the U.S. 15/U.S. 340
interchange, two miles to Interstate 270, and
three miles to MD 355/MD 85.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 52A - U.S. 15 South/
U.S. 340 West - Charles Town.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 52B - U.S. 15 North -
Gettysburg. Interstate 270 is 3/4 mile away.
This button copy directional diagram sign, 1/2
mile prior to the Interstate 270 interchange,
informs motorists that two lanes will go on each
interstate.
Now just 1/4 mile to Interstate 270, these newer
reflective signs are present. Interstate 270
provides a connection from Frederick to the
Capital Beltway northwest of Washington, DC.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 53 - Interstate 270
South - Washington. Notice the old skinny exit
tab. The Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) is
32 miles away for those exiting here.
Most interstate-to-interstate interchanges in
Maryland have gore point signage much like
this one here at Exit 53, with the interstate
shield included.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 54 - MD 355/MD 85 -
TO Market St.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 55 - South St./
Fairgrounds. If you drive the speed limit (65)
between Frederick and Baltimore, then you
will be passed every other second. Don't say
I didn't warn you.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 56 - MD 144 - Patrick
St.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 62 - MD 75 -
Libertytown/Hyattstown.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 68 - MD 27 -
Damascus/Mt. Airy.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 73 - MD 94 -
Woodbine/Lisbon.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 76 - MD 97 -
Westminster/Olney.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 80 - MD 32 -
Sykesville/Clarksville.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 82 - U.S. 40 East -
Ellicott City.
Mileage sign along Interstate 70 East. U.S. 29
is in three miles, Interstate 695 is in eight miles,
and Downtown Baltimore is in 15 miles. But
you can't get to downtown from Interstate 70!
Interstate 70 East at Exit 87A - U.S. 29 South -
Columbia/Washington.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 87B - U.S. 29 North/
TO MD 99.
Sign on Interstate 70 East, about five miles
west of Interstate 695, informing motorists on
how to get to Camden Yards from Interstate 70
East.
Now just four miles away from Interstate 695,
and the final mileage sign seen on Interstate 70
East.
Interstate 70 East approaching Interstate 695 -
2 miles.
This sign, about 1 1/2 miles before Interstate
695, says that Interstate 70 ends at Interstate
695. However, as you'll see later, it doesn't!
Interstate 70 East approaching Exits 91A-B -
Interstate 695 TO Interstate 95 - 1 mile. Only
the left lane continues straight.
Now just 1/2 mile away from Baltimore's outer
beltway, the control cities of New York and
Towson are added for Interstate 695 North, and
Baltimore and Glen Burnie for Interstate 695
South. Also notice the old TO Interstate 95
shield on the right post; this is also seen at the
exit itself.
One-quarter of a mile to Interstate 695. Once
again, the right two lanes will exit.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 91A - Interstate 695
South TO Interstate 95 South - Baltimore/Glen
Burnie, and Exit 91B - Interstate 695 North TO
Interstate 95 North - New York/Towson.
Another lane is added to the Security Blvd./
Park & Ride off-ramp after the gore point of
the Interstate 695 exits.
This highway is actually considered more of an
off-ramp to Security Blvd. and the Park & Ride,
but Interstate 70 exit numbering continues. So
I will call this Interstate 70 East approaching
Exit 94 - Security Blvd. North/Park & Ride - one
mile.
"Freeway Ends: 1/2 mile" sign on Interstate 70
East approaching the Park & Ride. This
section of highway is lightly traveled.
Interstate 70 East approaching Exit 94 - 1/2
mile. The lane striping now allows for one lane
only, which is really all that is needed at this
point.
Interstate 70 East at Exit 94 - Security Blvd.
The Park & Ride is straight ahead. And, thus
the end of Interstate 70, in a Park & Ride!
Although my passenger side pillar is in the
way, these are shields at the turnaround in the
Park & Ride. According to these signs, this
really is Interstate 70!
Interstate 70's first westbound exit is at Security
Blvd. north, which is maintained by the county. I
call this Exit 94B.
Interstate 70 West at Exit 94 - Cooks Lane
South.
Interstate 70 West approaching Exits 91A-B -
Interstate 695 - Towson/Glen Burnie - 1 mile.
Unlike the eastbound lanes, the westbound
lanes have lasted a lot longer. The traffic in the
distance is merging from Security Blvd.
Interstate 70 West approaching Exits 91A-B -
1/2 mile. The plan was to have three lanes
continue on Interstate 70 West, but since it
wasn't completed, only one lane is really
necessary, so the lanes were striped
accordingly.
Interstate 70 West at Exits 91A-B - Interstate
695 - Glen Burnie/Towson. Imprints of three
down arrows are visible on the Interstate 70
guide sign.
Suddenly, the pavement becomes new again
as Exit 91A and Exit 91B prepare to split. And
after being on Interstate 70 since St. Louis on
Day Two, I will finally be on another interstate!
