DELAWARE TRIP
U.S. 50/U.S. 301 Maryland

U.S. 50 and U.S. 301 share a freeway between Bowie and Queenstown, Maryland. I drove this freeway, also known as the John Hanson Highway, during Day Four, Day Five, and Day Eight of the Delaware Trip.

For pictures from U.S. 50 on Maryland's Eastern Shore, and pictures from Day Eight of the Delaware Trip, please see the U.S. 50 Maryland page. For pictures from Day Five on U.S. 50 East and U.S. 50 West between Washington, DC and Ocean City, MD, please head to the U.S. 50 Maryland Highway Guide.

Interstate 97 to MD 404
Pictures taken March 16, 2003

U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North approaching Exit
22 - MD 665. This is actually on the ramp from
Interstate 97 South to U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301
North. The Interstate 97 and MD 665
interchanges share several ramps.
Still on the ramp from Interstate 97 South, Exit
22 for MD 665 departs. U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301
North traffic accesses Exit 22 by exiting off
before Interstate 97, then the ramp joins the
interstate's ramp.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 23 - MD
450 TO MD 178 - Parole.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 24 - MD
70 - Rowe Blvd./Bestgate Rd./Annapolis. This
is also the eastern terminus of hidden
Interstate 595.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 27 - MD 2
North/MD 450 South - Baltimore/Naval
Academy.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 28 - Bay
Dale Drive.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 29A - MD
79 - St. Margaret's Rd./Busch's Frontage Rd.
U.S. 50 East/U.S 301 North at Exit 29B -
Cape St. Claire Rd./East College Pkwy.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 30 -
Whitehall Road.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 31 -
Whitehall Road. The exits are now becoming
substandard as the right-of-way is very
narrow. Most exits between here and the split
of U.S. 50 and U.S. 301 have posted speeds
of 15 mph because the off-ramp is basically
a 90-degree turn with the road right there to
greet you.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 32 -
Sandy Point State Park. This is the final exit
before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North approaching the
Bay Bridge toll plaza. Cars pay $2.50 to cross
the five-mile long bridge. Westbound travelers,
however, do not pay toll.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at the bridge toll
plaza. There are over ten lanes available, with
two set aside for EZ-Pass members.
The beginning of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge
on U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North. This was the
first of four times I would cross the bridge on
this trip. This was also the clearest weather I
encountered on any of those trips.
Approaching the first arch of the Bay Bridge.
The lanes can be modified easily to a two-way
format if traffic amounts are high.
Now we are beginning the descent onto the
Eastern Shore. No stopping is allowed on the
bridge, and rightfully so, considering that there
is no shoulder!
And down the stretch we come! The Eastern
Shore is definitely in view. Now just about 70
more miles of driving remain before I make it
to Delmar!
"Welcome to Maryland's Eastern Shore" sign
just after making it back to land. The first
Eastern Shore exit is just ahead at Exit 37 for
MD 8.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 37 - MD
8 - Stevensville/Romancoke.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 38A -
Thompson Creek Road.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 39A - Cox
Neck Rd.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 39B - MD
552 - Dominion Road.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 40A -
South Piney Road.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 40B -

18 - Main St./Grasonville.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 43B -
Chester River Beach Road.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 44A -
Station Lane.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 44B -
Evans Ave.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 45A -
Hess Road.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North at Exit 45B -
Nesbit Road. U.S. 50 and U.S. 301 split in
1 1/2 miles.
U.S. 50 East/U.S. 301 North approaching
their split - 1/2 mile.
U.S. 50 East and U.S. 301 North split at this
Y-interchange. The freeway also comes to an
end here, but both highways do continue as
four-lane divided highways.
Right after exiting the freeway, motorists are
immediately informed that they are no longer
on an access-controlled highway. U.S. 50
East is seen here at MD 18 West.
Mileage sign on U.S. 50 East. Salisbury,
just six miles south of my destination, is 64
miles away! The eastern end of U.S. 50 is in
94 miles at Ocean City.
U.S. 50 East at MD 456 North.
U.S. 50 East at MD 662 South. MD 662
parallels U.S. 50 between this point and
Easton, 12 miles to the south.
U.S. 50 East approaching MD 404. MD 404
is a major two-lane highway from U.S. 50 to
the beaches of southeastern Delaware.
U.S. 50 East at MD 404 East - Denton/
Rehoboth.
Per Maryland and Delaware standard, there is
a separate sign on the right side of the road
for the other direction, in this case, this is U.S.
50 East at MD 404 West.
